  • Chunking Method

In maths we have been learning the ‘chunking’ method to divide. For example 458 stickers are shared between 3 children. How many does each child get?

    4 5 8
    3 0 0 that’s 100 x3
    1 5 8 left
    1 5 0 that’s 50 x3
    8 left
    6 that’s 2 x3
    2 left over

Or we could use a number line to work it out; for example:
    0 300 450 6
    ___________________________________________________________________________

    (100 x 3) (50 x 3) (2 x 3) and 2 left

    So 100 + 50 + 2 = 152 remainder 2

I hope this helps. We are going to keep revisiting this objective throughout the year!

We learnt the numbers 1 to 10 in French and discussed things that tempt us in RE. Swimming was cancelled, whihc was a good thing as we were told green gunge was seeping out across the pool!!! A close escape!

We looked at the 4 ways authors start stories; description of a setting, character, action or dialogue. How does your reading book start?

Have a good weekend! Don't leave the homework till Monday night! If you need any help or are unsure just ask, missplackett@hotmail.co.uk

Today we ordered the events of The Mouth Organ Boys considering the high and low points. The class were introduced to a new method to dividing, which although difficult at first will be so much easier for long multiplication and particularly division with remainders.
We discussed our rights and reponsibilities in PSHCE (Personal, social, health, citizenship education) The class came up with some really good ideas, I particualrly liked the one that said the right to money! I don't know where they think they are going to get that at school! Maybe from the child that said I should pay them for jobs, like sharpening pencils and stacking chairs!!!

I have told the class that the times tables on the washing line will be taken down after christmas, next week they will be tested each day and timed! We will keep practising! Try some of the times tables games on www.bbc.co.uk/learning.

If there are any websites or work you have done you would like to share on the blog, please let me know!

Today the class tasted different breads in DT, they voted on naan as their favourite. We looked at Matisse's The Snail in ICT, then used the drawing tools in word to create our own shape pictures. Tomorrow we are going to be learning the chunking method in maths.
Look at www.nsfw.org for information on national film week.

We still need parent helpers for the trip to the cinema in a couple of weeks. If you are able to help, please come and see me.

Today we read the forst couple of pages of The Mouth Organ Boys. We discussed its similarities with The Fib story from last week. In numeracy we have been doing word problems with division. In PE we set out the apparatus so we know where it will go for the next half term.
This afternoon we calculated the distance from us to Bangalore (the closest city with an airport to Chembakolli) it was 5090 miles!

If you want to try a new website, there are some really good homwork help and games sections on www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk
